In Tamil Nadu, the patta is the ownership record in a person's name and the chitta is the land detail record for a survey number. Both can be viewed on eservices.tn.gov.in with district, taluk, village and survey number, and guides say no login is needed. Patta transfer is now applied for online through e-Sevai or tamilnilam.tn.gov.in.
Menu names below follow public guides and one news report. No helpline number is listed here, and the legal standing of the web copy is not settled; if a bank or court needs more than the web copy, ask the Tahsildar office.

Click path to view a patta and chitta
- Open eservices.tn.gov.in and click View Patta & FMB / Chitta / TSLR Extract. The list offers View Patta / Chitta Copy & A-Register Extract for Rural or Urban areas, and Verify Web Issued Patta / Chitta Copy & A-Register Extract.
- Pick Rural or Urban, then District and Taluk.
- Select the Village, and ward and block for urban areas.
- Enter the Survey Number and Sub-Division Number, then submit. An OTP may be sent to your mobile for verification, so keep your phone with you.
- For an A-Register extract, enter the patta number and the verification value shown on screen.
The Verify Web Issued option lets an officer or buyer check that a printed web copy is genuine. For court use, ask the Tahsildar office whether the web copy is enough.
Patta transfer (mutation): portal, fee and time
- Apply only online: the state's Mudhalvarin Mugavari department said patta transfer and revenue certificate applications are accepted only through the e-Sevai portal (tnsevai.tn.gov.in) or authorised e-Sevai centres. Guides also name tamilnilam.tn.gov.in and Common Service Centres.
- Fee: guides disagree. One says ₹60 at a Common Service Centre and ₹100 online; another says ₹100 per application. The news report gives no fee. Confirm the fee at the e-Sevai centre before paying.
- Documents named: registered sale deed, previous patta, encumbrance certificate, Aadhaar and latest tax receipts.
- Time: guides say auto-mutation after registration within hours, 15 to 30 days for a manual sale case, and up to 36 weeks for legal-heir cases. No official time limit is published.
- The Village Administrative Officer (VAO) and the Tahsildar process the application.
Name changes, errors and grievances
- A name change or correction is filed through the same online channels and handled by the VAO and Tahsildar. A guide says an offline name-change request at the VAO office shows online within 30 days; confirm with the VAO.
- Every Monday, District Collectors, Revenue Divisional Officers and Tahsildars receive public petitions. A stuck file can be followed up with a complaint to the Tahsildar and then an RTI application.
- No dedicated patta helpline number is published; ask at the Tahsildar office.
Keep these ready
- Survey number and sub-division number, for example the number before and after the slash, as printed on an old patta or tax receipt.
- District, taluk and village names; for urban plots also the ward and block.
- A working mobile number in case the portal sends an OTP.
- The registered sale deed and encumbrance certificate if you are applying for transfer.
If the survey number is not found, try the sub-division number in a different form, and confirm that the village belongs to the taluk you selected.
Units and related pages
Tamil Nadu extents are commonly spoken of in cents, grounds and ankanam. Check the extent and unit printed on your patta and convert it with the land area converter. The same land details are needed for the Farmer Registry, a Kisan Credit Card and PM Kisan. For other states see land records for all states.
