Is Wind Energy Right for Your Farm?
Wind power is the most site-dependent of all renewables. A turbine only produces useful energy where the wind blows strongly and steadily - typically the windy belts of coastal Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, and parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. On a sheltered, low-wind plot a small turbine can sit nearly idle, so the first step is always to check your wind, not to buy hardware. Where wind is weak, solar is almost always the better choice; where wind is strong, or where you need power at night and in the monsoon when solar dips, wind or a wind-solar hybrid can earn its keep.
Three Ways to Use Wind on a Farm
- Small wind turbine: generates electricity for lighting, fencing, small pumping or off-grid use, usually with a battery or a grid connection.
- Wind-solar hybrid pump: pairs solar panels with a small turbine so you can pump water across more hours of the day and year.
- Mechanical windmill pump: a multi-blade windmill that lifts water directly with no electricity, fuel or battery - simple and durable where the water table is shallow.
What Does It Cost?
Wind hardware varies widely by size, tower height and site, and per unit of energy it usually costs more than solar. Whether it pays back depends almost entirely on your actual wind. Subsidy & Policy - the Honest Picture
There is no nationwide wind-pump subsidy for farmers. PM-KUSUM, the big pump subsidy scheme, funds solar pumps, not wind. Support for small wind and hybrids exists but is limited and site-specific, mainly through MNRE, the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) and some state renewable-energy agencies.
