What is Drip Irrigation?

Drip irrigation delivers water drop by drop directly to the root zone of each plant through a network of pipes and emitters. This precision means almost no water is wasted to evaporation or runoff - it is the most water-efficient irrigation method available, saving 30-50% water versus flood irrigation while increasing yields 20-30%. You can also dissolve fertilizer in the water (fertigation), cutting fertilizer use 25-30%.

Benefits of Drip Irrigation

  • Water saving 30-50%: Vital where groundwater is scarce or electricity for pumping is costly.
  • Higher yield (20-30%): Constant optimal moisture at the root boosts growth and quality.
  • Fertigation: Apply soluble fertilizer through the system - 25-30% fertilizer saving and better uptake.
  • Less weeds & disease: Only the root zone is wetted, so weeds between rows and fungal disease reduce.
  • Works on any terrain: Suits undulating land, sandy soils and saline water better than flooding.

Best Crops for Drip Irrigation

Drip gives the highest return on widely-spaced and high-value crops: sugarcane (40% water saving, 25% more yield), banana (45% saving), cotton (35%), vegetables like tomato, onion and chili (40-50%), and orchard crops like grapes and pomegranate. Subsurface drip is increasingly used for wheat and maize too.

Drip Subsidy 2026 - Rates & How to Apply

Under PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (Per Drop More Crop), the central subsidy is 55% for small/marginal farmers and 45% for general category on the approved cost. Most states add a 10-25% top-up - in several states SC/ST and small farmers effectively get 80-90%. A 1-acre drip set costing ₹50,000-70,000 can cost as little as ₹15,000-35,000 after subsidy, with a payback of just 2-3 years.

  1. Register on your state micro-irrigation portal with Aadhaar, land records and bank account.
  2. A field survey is done and the system is designed for your crop and spacing.
  3. Subsidy is sanctioned; you pay only the balance to the empanelled supplier.
  4. The system is installed and verified, and the subsidy is released.
💡 Tip: Combine drip with a subsidised solar pump for near-zero running cost. Not sure between drip and sprinkler? See sprinkler irrigation, and check every benefit on the Subsidy Finder.
