How to control Phalaris minor (gulli danda) in wheat?

Mandauli or gulli danda is the most damaging grassy weed in the rice-wheat belt and has become resistant to several herbicides.

Phalaris minor (gulli danda) can cut wheat yield by 15 to 40 percent and has developed resistance to older herbicides like isoproturon and even clodinafop in many fields. Rotate herbicide modes of action and do not use the same product every year. Effective post-emergence options include pinoxaden, or a tank-mix of clodinafop or sulfosulfuron with metribuzin, applied at 30 to 35 days after sowing on a moist field. A pre-emergence spray of pendimethalin within 1 to 3 days of sowing followed by a post-emergence herbicide gives 90 to 100 percent control. Also use cultural methods: timely sowing, dense crop stand and crop rotation to reduce the weed seed bank. Always follow the label dose and check with your KVK, as resistance patterns differ by area.

In Hisar clodinafop stopped working in my fields. I switched to pinoxaden and also do pendimethalin right after sowing now. Big improvement.

The single biggest thing that reduced gulli danda for me was changing the rotation. After two seasons of putting in a non-cereal crop like mustard or berseem on the worst plot, the weed pressure dropped a lot. Chemicals alone were never enough.

Spray timing matters more than people think. On a dry field or when the weed is too big past 35 days, control is poor. I irrigate, wait for the field to come to working moisture, and spray when the weed is small.

Do not keep using the same product every year, even if it works. That is how clodinafop failed here. I now rotate the mode of action season to season and tank-mix with metribuzin where the label allows, on advice from the KVK.

After switching to a Happy Seeder, the paddy residue mulch on top suppressed a good part of the gulli danda emergence for me. It does not replace herbicide but it lightens the load. Worth trying if you are already avoiding stubble burning.

Use a flat-fan nozzle and the full recommended water volume, and walk at an even pace. The strips I missed with a hurried spray came back thick with gulli danda. Even, calm-day application made the difference for me.
