Overview

Wheat is India's main rabi cereal and a heavy feeder that responds strongly to balanced nutrition. Yield depends on giving the right amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash at the right crop stage, not on dumping extra urea. ICAR and State Agricultural Universities recommend a balanced N:P:K dose for irrigated wheat, with nitrogen split between sowing and the crown-root and tillering stages. Phosphorus and potash work best when placed near the seed at sowing. Wheat in light, sandy and salt-affected soils often needs zinc and sometimes sulphur. Always treat the figures below as a starting range and adjust them to your Soil Health Card or a fresh soil test and the advice of your local KVK, because soil fertility, variety and irrigation differ from field to field.

Recommended NPK dose for Wheat

A common ICAR recommendation for irrigated wheat is about 120 kg N, 60 kg P2O5 and 40 kg K2O per hectare, which is roughly 48 kg N, 24 kg P2O5 and 16 kg K2O per acre. In fertiliser terms per hectare this is about 130 kg DAP plus 210 kg urea plus 67 kg MOP, or per acre about 52 kg DAP plus 85 kg urea plus 27 kg MOP. Where DAP is used, reduce urea because DAP already supplies some nitrogen. Late-sown and rainfed wheat usually needs less, around 80 to 90 kg N per hectare. These are general ranges only. Always adjust the dose to your Soil Health Card or a fresh soil test and confirm with your local KVK before buying fertiliser.

Application schedule

Apply the full phosphorus and potash and one third to one half of the nitrogen as a basal dose at sowing, placed near the seed. Give the next nitrogen split at the crown-root initiation stage, about 21 to 25 days after sowing with the first irrigation, and the final split at the tillering stage, about 40 to 45 days after sowing with the second irrigation. In light sandy soils a three-way nitrogen split gives better results than two. Do not top-dress nitrogen after the flowering stage, as it mainly promotes late tillers and lodging rather than grain yield.

Organic & bio-fertilizers

Mix 8 to 10 tonnes of well-rotted farmyard manure or 4 to 5 tonnes of good compost per hectare into the soil before sowing, which is about 3 to 4 tonnes of FYM per acre. Where FYM is short, 2 to 2.5 tonnes of vermicompost per hectare works well. A green manure crop such as dhaincha or sunhemp before wheat improves soil nitrogen and structure. Treat seed with Azotobacter and PSB biofertilisers to help fix nitrogen and release fixed phosphorus, which can save part of the chemical fertiliser. Adding organic manure every year steadily raises soil organic carbon and reduces the urea you need over time.

Micronutrients & deficiency signs

Zinc is the most common micronutrient deficiency in wheat, especially in sandy, calcareous and rice-wheat soils. Where the soil test shows it, apply about 25 kg zinc sulphate per hectare at sowing, roughly 10 kg per acre. Zinc deficiency shows as pale yellow to whitish bands or patches between the leaf veins on middle leaves, with stunted plants. Sulphur deficiency, common in light soils and after oilseeds, shows as overall yellowing of younger leaves and can be corrected with single super phosphate or gypsum. Iron and manganese deficiency, seen as yellowing between veins of new leaves, occurs mainly in alkaline soils and is best corrected with a foliar spray.

Tips & cautions

Split nitrogen instead of giving it all at once, because wheat takes up nitrogen slowly and one heavy dose is washed or lost. Prefer neem-coated urea, which releases nitrogen more slowly and improves use efficiency. A foliar spray of nano urea at the tillering and early grain-filling stages can supplement, but it does not fully replace soil-applied basal nitrogen. Do not overuse urea, since excess causes lush growth, lodging, more disease and pest attack, and wasted money. Always place phosphorus near the seed rather than broadcasting it, and follow your Soil Health Card.
