For irrigated timely-sown wheat the general recommendation is about 50 kg nitrogen, 25 kg phosphorus and 12 kg potash per acre (120:60:30 kg per hectare of N:P2O5:K2O). In practical bag terms this is roughly 1 bag DAP plus about 2 bags urea per acre, adjusting urea so total N reaches target. Apply full phosphorus, potash and one-third nitrogen at sowing, then the rest of the nitrogen in two splits: at first irrigation (crown root stage, around 21 days) and at second irrigation. Always base the exact dose on a soil test and your Soil Health Card, and add zinc sulphate if your soil is zinc deficient, which is common in rice-wheat areas.
Soil test changed everything for me. I was wasting urea. Now I split nitrogen with each irrigation and the crop colour stays even.
If you use DAP and urea only, you get no sulphur. I started adding single super phosphate (SSP) for part of the phosphorus so the crop also gets sulphur, and the grain filling improved. Check your soil report for sulphur status first.
A leaf colour chart or just watching crop colour helps fine-tune urea. If the crop is dark green and lush, hold back nitrogen, because excess makes it lodge. I tie my top dressing to each irrigation rather than dumping it all early.
Place the DAP with the seed drill at sowing rather than broadcasting it on top. Banded near the root zone, the phosphorus is used much better, especially in our cooler soils early in the season.
