A good Murrah buffalo gives about 10 to 16 litres of milk per day on average, with well-managed elite animals reaching up to 20 litres or more at peak. Lactation yield is roughly 1800 to 2500 litres over about 300 to 310 days, and Murrah milk has high fat (often 6 to 7 percent), which fetches a better rate. Actual yield depends on feeding (green fodder plus balanced concentrate), water, clean housing and the animal's pedigree. When buying, ask for milk records, check the previous calving history, and have a vet examine the udder. Haryana is the home tract of Murrah, so source from registered breeders.

My two Murrah buffaloes give about 12 and 14 litres. Fat is excellent so the dairy pays me well. Feed them mineral mixture daily, it really helps yield and breeding.

Do not only look at peak yield when buying. A seller can milk an animal heavily for a few days to show a high figure. Ask how many days into lactation she is, because yield naturally falls in later months. I buy in early lactation so I get the full curve.

Summer heat hits buffalo yield more than people expect. A wallowing tank or just bathing them twice a day in May and June kept my milk steady when neighbours dropped 2 to 3 litres. Shade and cool water are nearly free and pay back fast.
