For timely-sown wheat use about 40 kg of seed per acre (100 kg per hectare) with normal grain size. For bold-seeded varieties increase slightly to 45 kg per acre. For late sowing after late November, raise the seed rate to 50 kg per acre to compensate for reduced tillering, since late crop has less time to produce tillers. Always use certified seed, and adjust upward if germination is below 85 percent or if you are broadcasting instead of using a seed drill. A proper seed drill at 20 to 22.5 cm row spacing gives more even stand and better yield than broadcasting.

I use 40 kg per acre with a seed drill for timely sowing and bump it to 50 kg when I am late. Works well for me in UP.

Do a quick germination test before sowing: count how many out of 100 seeds sprout on a wet cloth. If it is well below 85 percent, raise your seed rate or change the lot. This saved me from a thin stand one season.

If you sow with a Happy Seeder into paddy residue, keep the seed rate at the higher end for good seed-to-soil contact. With heavy mulch a slightly thin stand is common, so a little extra seed helps.
