DSR transition first year yield laser level herbicide plan paddy Punjab Haryana risk

Most first-year DSR yield drops come from weeds, uneven stand and iron deficiency, not from the method itself, so plan for those before sowing. Start on a well levelled, preferably laser levelled, loam field rather than very sandy soil, use the recommended seed rate of about 8 to 10 kg per acre with a DSR or lucky seed drill at 20 cm rows and 2 to 3 cm depth, and treat seed with a fungicide. Spray pre-emergence pendimethalin within 1 to 2 days of sowing, then a timely post-emergence herbicide such as bispyribac sodium around 20 to 25 days, since missing the weed window is the main cause of failure. Keep ferrous sulphate ready for iron yellowing on lighter patches, and give the first irrigation around 21 days then at 7 to 10 day intervals. Try DSR on part of your area the first year, learn the weed timing, then scale up. Confirm herbicide doses with your local KVK.

I kept DSR on half my land the first year. Once I got the spray timing right the yield matched my transplanted field and the water bill was much lower.

In Punjab the laser levelling made the biggest difference for me, because low spots stayed wet and grew weeds while high spots dried and went yellow. After levelling, the stand was even and the herbicide worked uniformly.

One caution: the pre-emergence spray must go down within a day or two of sowing on moist soil, not later. The first year I delayed it and the weeds got ahead, and no later spray fully recovered that field.
