Pusa Basmati 1509 vs 1121 maturity yield grain

Pusa Basmati 1509 is an early, short duration basmati maturing in about 115 to 120 days, while Pusa Basmati 1121 takes around 145 days and is famous for extra-long grain and very high kernel elongation after cooking. PB 1509 is shorter, non-lodging, non-shattering, allows late sowing and an early window for wheat, and yields around 4.2 to 6.5 tonnes per hectare. PB 1121 fetches premium export prices for its grain length but needs more water and a longer season. Choose 1509 if you want an early, easy crop and 1121 if you want top market grain quality and can give it more time and water.
I grow 1509 first then take potato, and keep 1121 in part of the field for better rate. Buyers pay more for 1121 length.
One thing on 1509, it can shatter and over ripen fast if you delay harvest. Watch it closely near maturity. 1121 gives you a bit more time before grain loss.
Water is the real difference for me. In a dry year 1509 with fewer irrigations still gave a fair crop, while 1121 struggled and the grain was thinner. If your tube well is weak, lean towards 1509.
For pure rate per quintal, 1121 wins in good export years in our Karnal mandi. But the price swings a lot. I split my area between the two to balance early money and high rate.
Both need lower urea than coarse paddy or they lodge and lose aroma. I learnt this the hard way with 1121 falling flat after heavy nitrogen. Keep nitrogen moderate for either variety.
Caution on seed. Buy certified basmati seed only, as mixed or fake lots ruin the grain length premium that 1121 is known for. Check the tag and confirm the variety with your dealer or KVK.
