In Punjab transplanting is regulated by the state government to save groundwater, usually allowed from around mid June, with the exact start date notified each year under the Preservation of Subsoil Water Act. Transplant 25 to 30 day old seedlings, 2 to 3 seedlings per hill, at 20 cm row to row and 15 cm plant to plant spacing. Do not transplant too early as it wastes water and worsens the water table. Basmati is usually transplanted later, from late June to mid July. Confirm the official permitted date with the Punjab Agriculture Department each season as it changes year to year.

We follow the notified date now. Earlier early ropai gave more pest attack and higher diesel bills for pumping.

Keep your nursery age matched to the notified date so seedlings are not overgrown by the time ropai opens. I sow nursery about 25 days before the permitted start to be safe.

Transplanting too early also clashes with peak heat, and labour for ropai is hard to get and costly. Waiting for the notified date worked out cheaper for me overall.

For basmati I deliberately go later, towards mid July, as the team says. Late planting gives better grain quality and aroma in my experience, and it spreads out the labour rush.
