How to grow basmati rice in Western UP?

Grow basmati in Western UP by choosing notified basmati varieties like Pusa Basmati 1121, 1509 or 1718, raising a healthy nursery, and transplanting from late June to mid July at 20 by 15 cm spacing. Basmati needs lower nitrogen than coarse paddy, around 90 to 100 kg N per hectare, as excess nitrogen causes lodging and poor aroma. Manage water with light irrigation and AWD, control stem borer, leaf folder, BPH, and watch for blast and bacterial leaf blight. Western UP falls in the GI tagged basmati belt, so good grain quality fetches export linked prices. Sell to private buyers and millers since basmati is outside MSP. Use certified seed and local KVK advice.
