Shrivelled, lightweight wheat grain usually results from terminal heat stress during grain filling, moisture shortage at the milk and dough stage, late sowing, or disease like rust reducing the green leaf area. To get plump grain, sow on time so grain filling avoids peak heat, keep adequate soil moisture with irrigation at the late-grain-filling stage, ensure balanced nutrition including potassium, and control rust and other foliar diseases early. In our Ganganagar belt the canal turn does not always come at the dough stage, which is exactly when the grain shrivels from moisture stress, so I now arrange a tubewell top-up for that one critical watering. Not leaving the crop thirsty at filling lifted my test weight and avoided the cut.

Keeping the flag leaf green and healthy right through grain filling made the difference for me. The years rust or a late nitrogen shortage dried the top leaves early, the grain stayed thin because the plant had nothing left to fill it. Protect the upper leaves and the grain fills better.

Balanced nutrition with potash helped my grain hold its weight, the years I gave only urea and skipped potash on this sandy land the grain came lighter. After I balanced the fertiliser on the soil test advice the grain filled bolder. Feeding only nitrogen will not give you plump grain.

That last irrigation at the dough stage is important but keep it light and watch the wind. I gave a heavy late irrigation once and the crop lodged in a windstorm, which hurt the grain too. A gentle watering to carry it to maturity without flattening it is the balance.
