Yellowing in paddy usually points to nitrogen deficiency, zinc deficiency (khaira), iron deficiency in DSR on light soils, or root damage from pests or waterlogging. If older lower leaves yellow uniformly it is often nitrogen, so top dress urea. If brown rusty spots appear with stunting 2 to 3 weeks after transplanting it is zinc, treat with zinc sulphate. If new upper leaves yellow between veins, especially in aerobic or DSR fields, it is iron, correct with ferrous sulphate spray. Also check for stem borer dead hearts, BPH at the base, and standing stagnant water. Confirm with a soil test and inspect roots before deciding the cause.
Mine was zinc, the rusty spots gave it away. Spray fixed it. A neighbour had iron yellowing in his DSR field.
Look at which leaves yellow first. Old leaves means nitrogen, new top leaves means zinc or iron. That simple check told me where to act instead of guessing and wasting spray.
Do not just keep adding urea every time you see yellow. My field was actually waterlogged and the roots were rotting. Draining the standing water brought the colour back without more fertiliser.
In my DSR field the upper leaves went yellow between the veins, which was iron. A ferrous sulphate foliar spray helped. This does not happen in my puddled transplanted field.
Pull up a few yellow plants and check the roots before spending on inputs. Brownish, rotten roots point to waterlogging or pest damage, not a nutrient problem. A KVK visit confirmed it for me.
After heavy rain my crop yellowed for a few days then recovered on its own once water drained. Temporary yellowing after waterlogging is common, so do not panic and over treat immediately.
