Procurement uses Fair Average Quality (FAQ) standards that set limits for moisture, foreign matter, shrivelled and broken grain, and damaged or weevilled grains, and lots outside these limits face a value cut or rejection. Wheat moisture is usually accepted around the low teens percentage, but the exact figure and tolerances are fixed by the official norms each season. The practical advice is to harvest at proper maturity, dry the grain well, clean it to remove dust and chaff, and store it dry. Always confirm the current FAQ limits and any relaxation with your local procurement centre before bringing your lot.

My simple rule is to sun-dry the grain for a day or two on the threshing floor and bite-test a few grains, if they crack crisply rather than dent, the moisture is usually fine for the mandi. Bringing slightly damp grain straight off the combine is what got me a cut earlier.

Cleaning matters as much as drying. The graders also look at foreign matter and dust, so I run my lot through a winnower or a small cleaning machine before loading. A clean, dry lot passes FAQ smoothly and avoids the arguments at the gate.

Try to bring your produce on a clear dry day and avoid the early misty morning when the grain picks up some surface moisture from the air. I had a borderline lot read higher moisture in the morning and fine by midday. Small things like that decide whether you get the cut.
