I could not sow wheat on time because paddy harvest got delayed. Want to know how much production I will lose by sowing in December.

As a rough guide, wheat yield can drop by about 1 to 1.5 percent per day, roughly 25 to 35 kg per acre per week, once sowing crosses the optimum window into late and very late dates, because the crop faces terminal heat at grain filling. To limit the loss, switch to a notified late-sowing variety, raise the seed rate by about 25 percent, give the first irrigation a little earlier at CRI stage, and use balanced fertiliser with extra attention to nitrogen splits. Exact figures vary by region, soil and season, so confirm the variety and dose with your local KVK or the Punjab Agricultural University package of practices.

Last year I sowed on 10 December with a late variety and higher seed rate, got a bit less than my timely plot but still a decent crop. Early first irrigation helped.

In our area near the Ghaggar belt the late paddy is the same problem every year. One trick that worked for me was keeping the field ready and sowing the very day the moisture was right, even into early December, rather than waiting another week for perfect tilth. Every clear sunny week you save matters more than getting a fine seedbed.

Do not forget the weed side of late sowing. My December wheat had heavy gulli danda pressure because the warm spell let it germinate fast, so plan your pre or early post-emergence weed control along with the higher seed rate. Late crop with weed competition loses double.
