Manage paddy stubble without burning by using machines like the Happy Seeder, Super Seeder, or by baling the straw for sale or fodder and mulch. The Happy Seeder sows wheat directly into standing stubble while retaining residue as mulch that conserves moisture and improves soil organic matter. Super Seeder mixes the stubble into soil while sowing. Balers collect straw for biomass plants, paper mills and cattle. Spreading a stubble decomposer spray after harvest also speeds breakdown. Government subsidies on crop residue management machinery are available through the state agriculture department, so apply at your block office. Burning harms soil health and attracts penalties.

Happy Seeder wheat looked weak first 2 weeks then caught up and saved one irrigation. No burning, no fine.

Baling worked well for me as the straw buyer picked it up from the field. It cleared the field for the Super Seeder and gave a little extra income instead of a fine.

Ask at the block office about the subsidy or hiring machines from a custom hiring centre. Buying a Super Seeder alone is costly, but renting per acre made it affordable for my small holding.

If you use a decomposer spray, give it enough time before sowing wheat and keep some moisture, or the straw does not rot in time. It is slower than the machine route but cheap.

Caution, the stubble retained as mulch can shelter some pests and slugs early on, so scout the young wheat. Even so, the moisture saving and zero fine made it worth it for me.
