A common recommendation for transplanted paddy is around 120 kg N, 60 kg P2O5 and 40 kg K2O per hectare, which is roughly 48 kg N, 24 kg P2O5 and 16 kg K2O per acre, but always follow your soil health card. Apply full phosphorus and potash and one third of nitrogen as basal, then split the remaining nitrogen in 2 to 3 top dressings at tillering and panicle initiation. In practice this is often near 100 kg urea per acre split in doses, plus a basal of DAP or single super phosphate and MOP. Add 25 kg zinc sulphate per hectare in deficient soils. Avoid dumping all urea early as it invites pests and lodging.
Splitting urea in 3 doses gave me better tillers than one heavy dose. Last basal of DAP every time.
Get the soil health card done before deciding. My soil already had enough potash, so I saved money by cutting MOP. The general dose is a starting point, not a fixed rule.
Basmati needs less nitrogen than this, around 90 to 100 kg N per hectare, or it lodges and loses aroma. The dose above suits coarse paddy. Match the dose to your variety.
Do not skip zinc in old puddled fields. I ignored it for years and saw khaira spots, then a zinc sulphate basal fixed the tillering. A soil test will tell you if you need it.
The panicle initiation top dressing of nitrogen made a clear difference to my grain filling. Many people put all urea early and miss this stage. Save a dose for then.
I use a leaf colour chart from the KVK to decide when to add urea instead of fixed dates. It cut my urea use a little without losing yield. Worth asking your KVK for one.
Caution, broadcasting urea on standing deep water wastes a lot of it. Drain to a thin film, apply, then re-irrigate after a day. My fertiliser went much further this way.
