sheath blight rice fungus lesions control fungicide

Control sheath blight by avoiding dense planting and excess nitrogen, and spray a recommended fungicide such as validamycin, hexaconazole or propiconazole when greenish-grey water-soaked lesions appear on the sheath near the water line. The disease spreads upward in thick, lush canopies and high humidity, so wider spacing and balanced fertiliser reduce it. Remove weed hosts and old infected stubble, and avoid continuous deep flooding. Direct the spray to the lower canopy where the fungus develops. Sheath blight is one of the costliest rice diseases in well fertilised crops, so monitor from maximum tillering onward. Confirm fungicide and dose with your local KVK.
Thick crop with high urea always gets sheath blight here. Wider spacing reduced my sprays a lot.
Aim the spray low, near the water line, not at the top of the plant. That is where the lesions start and climb. Spraying only the upper leaves did nothing for me.
It really takes off in the humid, closed canopy after the field shades over. I now keep rows a little wider and the disease has been easier to manage in our Hooghly fields.
