A number of my gehu ears have turned white and stand out from the green crop, and the grain in them is empty or shrivelled.

Scattered white empty ear heads in an otherwise green wheat field can come from more than one cause, so it is worth checking carefully. The common reasons are root or foot rot and a stem base disease that strangles the plant so the head cannot fill, termite or borer damage at the base, water stress at grain filling, or a frost or heat shock at a sensitive stage. To narrow it down, gently tug a white tiller to see if it pulls out easily, dig at the base to look for rotten roots, termite galleries or borer holes, and note whether the white heads are in dry patches or near field edges; please send photos of the base and the head to your KVK or agri officer to confirm. There is no spray that will refill these empty heads, so the plan is to find the real cause and act on it: if termites are found, the officer can advise control and a future seed or soil treatment, if it is a root rot then crop rotation, clean seed and seed treatment help next season, and if it is water or heat stress then better irrigation timing and variety choice help. Confirm the cause with your local KVK before treating.

In my field the white heads pulled out easily and the roots were eaten, it was termites. The officer suggested a seed treatment for next time.

Mine were near the dry edge of the field where water did not reach at grain filling. Fixing the irrigation helped the next crop.

For me the white heads pulled out and showed a rotten brown base, the officer called it a foot rot. Crop rotation and treated seed reduced it next time.
