Broadleaf weeds in wheat such as bathua (lambsquarters), senji, krishnaneel and wild safflower compete for nutrients and water and are easy to control with the right herbicide at the right time. Spray a post-emergence broadleaf herbicide like 2,4-D or metsulfuron-methyl at 30 to 35 days after sowing on a moist field, in 200 litres of water per acre. If you also have Phalaris minor (grassy weed), use a ready-mix or tank-mix that covers both, such as metsulfuron plus a grass killer, or use metribuzin-based mixes. Spray on a calm day to avoid drift onto neighbouring broadleaf crops like mustard. Always read the label and use a flat-fan nozzle for even coverage.

In Bareilly bathua takes over if I am late. Spraying 2,4-D at about a month after sowing keeps it down. Timing on a moist field is key.

Be very careful with 2,4-D drift. The year I sprayed on a breezy day it damaged a neighbour's mustard. Now I spray early morning on a calm day and keep well away from broadleaf crops.

If you have both broadleaf and gulli danda, a proper tank-mix or ready-mix saves a second spray. I confirmed the combination with the dealer and KVK first so the products were compatible and at the right dose.

Spray when the weeds are small, around 30 to 35 days. On my field a late spray on big bathua plants gave poor kill and they had already robbed the crop of nutrients. Early and on a moist field works best.
