Greenish black velvety balls in my paddy panicle, are they safe?

Round greenish balls that turn velvety yellow to black and are larger than a normal grain are false smut, where individual grains are replaced by a ball of fungal spores. It usually shows up after flowering, is favoured by humid weather and heavy nitrogen near flowering, and often affects only scattered grains. Please confirm with a photo to your KVK or agri officer. Because it appears late, a spray now mostly will not save the already affected balls, so handle the present crop by carefully removing the smut balls into a bag where practical and not letting them shatter, and keep these grains out of seed for next year. The spore balls are best not used as food or feed, so clean them out of the harvested grain. For prevention next season, use clean seed, avoid excess late nitrogen, and your officer may suggest a protective spray around the boot to early flowering stage using recommended actives, but follow the label dose, the pre-harvest interval and the local KVK recommendation.
