Black powdery grains in my wheat ear instead of normal seed, what disease?

Black powder filling the ear in place of grain that blows away in the wind is a smut, most likely loose smut in wheat, where the whole head turns into a mass of dark spores. It is a seed borne disease, so the infection actually came in with the seed and shows only at ear emergence, which is why a spray now will not cure these heads. Please show a photo to your KVK or agri officer to confirm it is loose smut and not the partly enclosed look of some other smut. The real control is for next season: use certified, disease free seed and do a proper seed treatment, with the officer suggesting either a systemic fungicide seed treatment or a solar heat treatment of the seed. For this crop, pull out and bag the smutted heads where practical so the spores do not spread to nearby healthy heads. Confirm the seed treatment product and dose with your local KVK before sowing next time.
