Zinc and sulphur deficiencies are common in wheat, especially in light and rice-wheat soils. For zinc, apply about 10 kg of zinc sulphate (21 percent) per acre at sowing if your soil test shows deficiency, or correct a standing-crop deficiency with a foliar spray of zinc sulphate plus a little lime in water. For sulphur, apply around 8 to 10 kg of sulphur per acre, easily supplied through single super phosphate (SSP) or gypsum, particularly if you use DAP and urea that contain no sulphur. Always base micronutrient use on a soil test or Soil Health Card. Correcting these two deficiencies often gives a clear, low-cost yield gain.
If you only use DAP and urea you will likely run short of sulphur over time. I switched part of my phosphorus to SSP and the crop colour and grain filling improved. Check your soil report first to be sure.
For a quick fix on a standing crop showing zinc deficiency, a foliar spray of zinc sulphate with a little lime greened mine up fast. For the long term I now apply zinc at sowing based on the Soil Health Card so the problem does not return.
