Rajma (kidney bean) is grown in two settings. In the northern plains it is a rabi crop sown around October to November, since it needs cool weather and is sensitive to frost and high heat. In the hills it is a kharif crop grown through the warm season, and hill rajma like the famous Chamba and Uttarakhand types fetch a premium for taste and bold seed. Rajma, unlike most pulses, nodulates poorly and often responds to a little nitrogen, so it is managed slightly differently from other beans. Sow on time to avoid frost at flowering in the plains. In the plains rajma is a rabi crop, watch the frost dates at flowering. The hill rajma is a different season and gets a much better price for its taste and bold seed.

Remember rajma does not fix nitrogen well like other pulses, so it usually needs some nitrogen. I learned that after treating it like other beans and getting a pale weak crop.
