Confused between autumn and spring planting of sugarcane in UP. Which season gives better yield and recovery?

In north India including Uttar Pradesh, sugarcane is mainly planted in two seasons, autumn around September to October and spring around February to March. Autumn planting generally gives higher yield and better sugar recovery because the crop gets a longer growing period and good early establishment, and it allows profitable intercropping in winter. Spring planting is more common but yields a bit less as the crop faces summer heat early. Whichever season, use healthy red rot resistant seed cane, treat setts, plant at correct spacing, and ensure timely irrigation. Avoid very late spring planting which shortens the crop. If you can manage winter irrigation and intercrop, autumn planting is often more rewarding. Confirm dates and variety for your area with the UP cane department or your KVK.

Autumn cane gave me both a better yield and a winter potato intercrop in Bareilly, so the field earned twice. The catch is you must be able to give a couple of winter irrigations and protect young cane from frost in a cold snap. If your water is uncertain in winter, spring planting is the safer choice.

Do not push spring planting too late into the heat. The year I planted in late March on dry soil the germination was patchy and the crop struggled in the early summer. Earlier spring planting with good moisture germinated far better, so timing within the season matters as much as the season itself.
