Confused between 30 HP and 45 HP tractor for a small holding. What is right for puddling, rotavator and trolley work?

For around 5 acres, a tractor in the 35 to 45 HP range is usually the sweet spot. Below 5 acres a 20 to 35 HP tractor handles most light work, but if you want to run a rotavator (needs roughly 1.5 to 2 HP per foot of working width), pull a loaded trolley and do puddling, 40 to 45 HP gives you headroom without burning extra diesel on small fields. Match the implements you actually own or plan to buy, check that local dealers stock spares, and confirm PTO HP (the usable power at the shaft) rather than only engine HP. Going much above 50 HP for 5 acres mostly adds cost and fuel use with little gain.

I farm 6 acres and run a 42 HP tractor with a 6 foot rotavator and a 5 ton trolley. It pulls everything comfortably and is not too thirsty on diesel. My neighbour took 50 HP for the same size land and his fuel bill is higher for no real benefit.

For 5 acres do not overbuy. I started with 39 HP and never felt short. Spend the saved money on a good rotavator and a decent trolley instead of extra horsepower you will rarely use.

One thing nobody told me when I bought my first tractor: think about resale too. The popular 40 to 45 HP models sell faster second hand and hold value better than odd large sizes. If you plan to upgrade in a few years that matters.
