Good choices for the eastern plains include DBW 187 (Karan Vandana), DBW 252, HD-3171, HD-2967 for timely sowing, and DBW 173 or HD-3118 for late sowing. DBW 187 is widely grown in eastern India for its yield and adaptability. Sow as early as you can manage, ideally by mid-November, use certified seed, and for late sowing raise the seed rate. Early sowing of the right variety is the single biggest factor for good wheat yield in Bihar.

DBW 187 has worked well in my area in Bihar. But the real lesson is to sow as early as possible, late crop always suffers in the March heat here.

For our late-freed fields, HD-3118 has been good as a late-sowing option. I raise the seed rate and give the first irrigation a bit early. It finishes before the worst of the heat.

Buy certified seed from a reliable source. In our market a lot of loose seed is sold under big variety names but does not perform. The tagged seed from the seed corporation gave me a much better, truer crop.
