Yellowing can be from nitrogen shortage, zinc or sulphur deficiency, waterlogging or disease.

Yellowing in wheat has several causes, so identify the pattern first. General yellowing of older leaves usually means nitrogen shortage; top dress urea with the next irrigation. Yellowing with white or pale bands and brown patches on the middle of leaves often points to zinc deficiency, common in rice-wheat soils; spray zinc sulphate plus a little lime in water. Yellowing of younger upper leaves can be sulphur deficiency; apply a sulphur-containing fertiliser. Yellow stripes along veins in cool humid weather are yellow rust, a disease needing a fungicide spray. Yellowing in low waterlogged patches is from poor drainage. Match the treatment to the cause rather than just adding more urea.
My wheat went yellow in patches and I assumed it was nitrogen. It was actually zinc. A zinc sulphate spray greened it up in a week.
Look at which leaves are yellow. Old lower leaves going pale all over was nitrogen for me, fixed with urea at irrigation. Young top leaves yellowing turned out to be sulphur. The pattern tells you what to do.
Do not forget waterlogging. The low corner of my field always yellows after heavy irrigation or rain because water stands there. Improving the drainage in that patch fixed it, no fertiliser needed.
If it is yellow stripes along the veins in cool, foggy weather, treat it as yellow rust, not a nutrient problem, and spray a fungicide early. I wasted time adding urea once before realising it was rust spreading.
When unsure, take a few affected plants and a soil sample to the KVK or get a Soil Health Card reading. Guessing cost me a wrong spray once. A quick check saved money the next time.
