Termites damage wheat seedlings and roots, especially in fields with undecomposed crop residue.

Termites (deemak) attack wheat by feeding on roots and the stem base, causing seedlings to dry up in patches, and the problem is worse in light soils and fields with undecomposed straw or farmyard manure. The best prevention is seed treatment before sowing with chlorpyriphos or a fipronil-based insecticide at the label dose. If termites appear in a standing crop, apply chlorpyriphos with irrigation water (mix into the irrigation channel) so it reaches the roots. Use only well-decomposed farmyard manure, remove crop residue and avoid sowing in very dry soil. In Rajasthan and other dryland areas, seed treatment is the most reliable and cheapest protection.
Deemak used to dry out patches every year until I started treating seed before sowing. That one step solved most of it.
Avoid putting raw, undecomposed FYM in the field just before sowing. Termites love it. I now compost the manure fully before applying, and the termite trouble in my light soil dropped a lot.
If you see deemak in the standing crop, running chlorpyriphos with the irrigation water along the channel worked for me to get it to the roots. Follow the label dose and waiting period, and ask your KVK if unsure about the product.
