For late sowing (after late November into December) choose short-duration, heat-tolerant varieties bred for late conditions, such as DBW 173, DBW 71, HD-3059, HD-3118 and PBW 752. These mature faster and escape the March heat that damages grain filling in late crops. For very late sowing in December, increase seed rate to about 50 kg per acre, sow at narrow row spacing, and give the first irrigation a little earlier. Avoid long-duration timely-sown varieties like HD-2967 in late sowing, as they will not finish grain filling before the heat sets in.

After potato my field frees up in December. DBW 173 has been reliable for late sowing for me. It finishes in time.

For very late sowing I give the first irrigation a little earlier than usual and keep the rows close. The crop has less time, so I help it tiller fast. HD-3118 has done well for me after sugarcane.

Do not try to save money by using leftover timely-sown variety seed for a late plot. I did that with an old long-duration variety once and it got caught in March heat with shrivelled grain. Use a proper late-sowing variety.

Even with the right variety, the earlier you can manage to sow the better. Each extra week of delay still costs some yield, so I prioritise clearing the previous crop and sowing fast rather than waiting for perfect conditions.
