In Nizamabad belt many growers still keep Salem local and Duggirala types because traders know them, but the IISR varieties out yield local Salem by a good margin. Choose based on what your buyer pays for, since high curcumin lots fetch a premium for oleoresin units. Use disease free seed rhizomes at about 1000 to 1200 kg per acre, spacing 45 to 60 cm between ridges and 15 to 20 cm between plants. Confirm the latest notified varieties with your KVK or the Spices Board before buying seed.

I grow Pratibha near Armoor and the dry recovery is genuinely better than the old local. Curing and boiling gives a nice deep colour that the Nizamabad market men like. Keep your mother rhizome for seed, it saves cost next year.

Salem local still sells fast here because the traders are used to it. But my cousin shifted to Prabha and his curcumin test came higher so the oleoresin factory paid him extra. Depends on whether you sell to factory or to mandi.

Before you commit to any factory or agent promising a fixed buyback price for high curcumin lots, get the rate in writing and check that they actually test and pay on test results. Some agents talk up curcumin premiums to push their seed and then reject your lot at delivery. Sell where you can confirm the deal.
