Turmeric is a long-duration cash crop of roughly 8 to 9 months, grown on well-drained loamy soil with assured irrigation. Plant rhizomes around the onset of monsoon (kharif). It needs good organic matter, mulching and earthing up; yields commonly range a few tonnes of fresh rhizome per acre, which after boiling, drying and polishing become dry turmeric. The real money is in value addition, selling polished turmeric or powder under your own brand or through an FPO, rather than raw rhizome. Nizamabad is a major turmeric belt with an established market. Prices fluctuate, so consider storage and processing (a PMFME-supported powder unit) to capture better margins. Returns vary year to year; plan with conservative price assumptions and confirm local mandi rates.

We grow turmeric in Nizamabad and added a small polishing and powder unit through PMFME. Selling powder instead of raw turmeric improved our income a lot.

Keep back good healthy rhizomes for next year's seed, that is a big saving since seed is a major cost in turmeric. Also do not sell everything right at harvest when prices are usually lowest. If you can dry, polish and store, you sell later at a better rate. Verify current Nizamabad mandi rates before deciding when to sell.

On one acre the labour for harvesting and the boiling, drying and polishing steps is heavy, plan for that. A small powder unit shared through an FPO spread this cost across members for us. If you grow just one acre alone, the processing investment may not pay back, so consider joining or forming a group.
