Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a long-duration rhizome crop of about eight to nine months whose yield and curcumin content depend on rich organic soil and a balanced, well-split nutrient supply. Like ginger, it forms its valuable produce underground, so it needs plenty of potassium, generous farmyard manure and steady nitrogen to build the leafy canopy that drives rhizome bulking. Turmeric responds well to integrated nutrient management that blends organic manures, biofertilisers and a measured dose of chemical fertiliser. Mulching, earthing up and good drainage all work alongside fertiliser to protect the rhizome and lift yield. Always base your plan on a Soil Health Card soil test and confirm the exact dose with your KVK, since turmeric is grown across many soil types from light loams to heavy clays with very different fertility.

Recommended NPK dose for Turmeric

Recommendations vary by state. A widely used dose is about 60 to 125 kg nitrogen, 30 to 60 kg phosphorus and 60 to 120 kg potash per hectare, which is roughly 25 to 50 kg N, 12 to 25 kg P and 25 to 50 kg K per acre. Kerala commonly advises 60 kg N, 50 kg phosphorus and 120 kg potash per hectare. In potassium-poor soils, splitting potash as well between basal and the 90-day top dressing improves rhizome size.

Apply 20 to 25 tonnes of well-rotted farmyard manure or compost per hectare at land preparation, and add neem or groundnut cake at about 200 kg per hectare at planting. Mulching with green leaves at planting and again at the second and third top dressing conserves moisture, adds organic matter and suppresses weeds. Coir compost, vermicompost and biofertilisers such as Azospirillum and phosphate-solubilising bacteria improve nutrient supply and let you cut part of the chemical fertiliser while keeping yield.

Micronutrients & deficiency signs

In zinc-deficient soils, a basal dose of about 25 kg zinc sulphate per hectare, giving roughly 5 kg zinc, improves yield. Zinc deficiency shows as small leaves with yellowing between veins and stunted growth. Iron deficiency, common in alkaline soils, causes yellowing of young leaves with green veins. Boron supports rhizome quality, and its shortage causes cracking. Apply micronutrients only when a soil test confirms the shortage, as overdosing, especially of boron, harms the crop and soil.

Do apply generous well-rotted FYM and a cake like neem at planting. Do mulch and earth up at each top dressing to feed and protect rhizomes. Do split nitrogen across the long season. Don't waterlog the field, as turmeric rhizomes rot in standing water. Don't use raw manure, which spreads disease. Don't apply heavy late nitrogen, which delays maturity and lowers curcumin. Always combine organic and chemical sources and confirm your plan with the KVK.
