What spacing and how many cashew (kaju) grafts per acre should I plant?

Normal cashew spacing is commonly around 7 to 8 metres each way, giving roughly 70 to 80 grafts per acre, which suits the large spreading canopy of mature trees. On poorer or sloping land wider spacing is used, and high density planting at closer spacing of around 4 to 5 metres is sometimes done to get earlier and higher early yields, followed by thinning later as trees crowd, but this needs more management. Pick spacing based on your soil depth, slope and whether you will manage high density. Plant grafts in the pre monsoon with good pits and organic matter. Confirm the recommended spacing and any high density option for your soil with the Vengurla station or your KVK before laying out the orchard.
