How to control weeds in sugarcane (ganna) field?

Sugarcane📍 Muzaffarnagar

Sugarcane takes months to cover the ground and weeds run wild in between. Weeding so many times is costly. What weed control works for ganna?

Sugarcane is a long-duration, widely spaced crop that takes months to form a canopy, so weeds get a long free run and weed control is a major cost, but a planned mix of herbicide and inter-cultivation keeps it manageable. A common approach is a pre-emergence herbicide such as atrazine or metribuzin applied soon after planting on a moist field to stop the early flush, followed by inter-cultivation and earthing up between the wide rows, which is very effective in cane and also helps the crop. For later escapes a post-emergence directed spray of a product registered for sugarcane, or 2,4-D for broadleaf weeds where appropriate, can be used, applied carefully and away from the cane shoots. The wide rows of sugarcane also allow intercropping in the early months with a short crop, which covers the ground and suppresses weeds while giving extra income. As the cane canopy closes it shades out most later weeds. Use only herbicides registered for sugarcane, follow the label dose, timing and any rotation cautions for atrazine, apply directed sprays carefully, and confirm with your KVK, because the wrong herbicide can harm the crop.

Atrazine after planting plus inter-cultivation and earthing up between the rows is what I do in Muzaffarnagar. The hoeing does double duty in cane.

Intercropping the wide rows early with a short crop covered the ground and cut weeds while earning me extra. Once the cane closed in, weeds were not a problem.

Any 2,4-D for broadleaf weeds must be a careful directed spray away from the cane and away from sensitive neighbouring crops. Confirm timing with the KVK.
