Want to save on seed cane cost. How does the bud chip or single bud nursery method work for sugarcane?

The bud chip method uses single buds chipped out of the cane instead of planting whole setts, which sharply cuts seed cane requirement and cost. Buds are scooped with a bud chipper, treated against disease, raised in a nursery in trays or pro trays for about 4 to 6 weeks, then healthy seedlings are transplanted to the field at uniform spacing. Benefits are big savings in seed cane, more uniform crop, healthier disease free planting material, and easy gap filling. It needs more nursery management and careful transplanting, and timely irrigation after planting. It suits farmers who want to multiply a new variety quickly from limited seed. Get the sett and bud treatment schedule and spacing from your KVK or sugar mill cane department.

For me in Belagavi the biggest gain from bud chip was multiplying a new red rot tolerant variety fast from just a little seed cane. The nursery does need daily attention with watering and shade, so do not start it if you cannot give that care in the first month. Transplant when the soil has moisture, not into dry hot ground.

We saved a lot of cane that would have gone into the field as setts and used it for crushing instead. The uniform plant stand also made the field easier to manage. The catch is transplanting labour, so we did bud chip on part of the farm and conventional setts on the rest to balance the work.
