Flood irrigation using too much water and power. Is drip worth it for cane?

Drip can cut sugarcane water use by roughly 40 to 50 percent compared to flood while often raising yield because the root zone stays evenly moist. Use subsurface or surface drip with laterals along the cane rows, run fertigation through it so urea and potash go straight to the roots, and irrigate based on soil moisture rather than fixed days. You also save electricity and labour and weeds reduce between rows. Under PMKSY Per Drop More Crop, micro irrigation gets about 55 percent subsidy for small and marginal farmers and around 45 percent for others, with extra top up in some states, so apply through your agriculture or horticulture department. Get a proper design from a registered company for your slope and water quality.

I shifted 4 acres of cane to drip with subsidy two years back. Water bill and pump hours dropped a lot and tonnage went up. Only thing, clean the filters and flush laterals or they choke.

Fertigation is the real gain. Earlier I broadcast urea and half washed away. Now through drip it reaches roots and I use less fertiliser.

Take the design seriously. My first layout had wrong dripper spacing and some rows stayed dry. Get it done by experienced people.

If your water has iron or hardness, plan for it. My drippers clogged with deposits till I started acid treatment and regular flushing. A screen plus disc filter together kept things clean after that.
