My ratoon sugarcane yields much less than the planted crop. How to manage ratoon properly so it does not decline?

Ratoon yields drop when stubble management and early care are neglected, but a well kept ratoon can match the plant crop. Right after harvest, cut stubble close to the ground, remove and burn or compost trash or use it as mulch, and gap fill missing clumps quickly with seedlings. Do stubble shaving, give a light off barring or root pruning, then apply the first dose of fertiliser early since ratoon needs nutrition sooner, and irrigate promptly to push new shoots. Control early shoot borer and keep weeds down. Do not ratoon a crop that had red rot, wilt, or heavy borer, as disease carries over. Generally take only one or two ratoons before replanting with fresh healthy seed. Follow VSI Pune or KVK ratoon schedule for your area.

Trash mulching also harbours natural enemies that helped my early shoot borer pressure. I still scout the new shoots for dead hearts in the first two months and pull them out. Combining trash mulch with timely first irrigation and an early fertiliser dose is what closed the gap between my ratoon and plant crop. Confirm the borer control step for your area with VSI or the KVK.

My ratoon improved a lot once I started fertilising early instead of waiting. Earlier I treated ratoon casually and it always gave less. Now I gap fill fast and water on time.

Instead of burning the trash I started spreading it as mulch between the rows in Sangli. It kept moisture, cut my weeds, and slowly improved the soil. Burning wastes organic matter and the smoke is a problem too. Just keep the mulch off the stubble line so new shoots come up cleanly.
