Those symptoms, drying clumps, yellowing leaves, and split stalks that are red inside with crossbar white patches and a sour alcohol smell, are classic red rot, the most serious sugarcane disease caused by Colletotrichum falcatum. There is no spray that cures an infected field, management is mainly prevention. Use red rot resistant varieties, plant only healthy disease free seed cane from a clean nursery, and treat setts with a recommended fungicide and hot water or moist hot air treatment where available. Uproot and destroy affected clumps, do not ratoon a diseased crop, improve drainage as waterlogging worsens it, and rotate with non host crops for a couple of years. This is exactly why Co 0238 is being replaced. Confirm sett treatment fungicide with your KVK.

The crossbar white patches inside the red tissue are the giveaway, plain reddening can also be from borer or just bruising. When I was unsure I took a split cane to the KVK and they confirmed red rot. Do not waste money spraying a fungicide hoping to cure standing infected cane, it does not work.

Drainage made a real difference for us in low lying Meerut plots. The patches where water stood after rain always rotted first. After we cut field channels and stopped waterlogging, and shifted to a resistant variety, the spread dropped a lot the next season.
