Dead hearts in my young sugarcane, central shoot pulls out easily, what pest?

A dry dead central whorl that pulls out easily with a rotten smell and a bore hole near the base, in cane up to about three to four months, is early shoot borer dead heart. Pull out and destroy all dead heart shoots with the larva inside, this directly cuts the next generation. Light, frequent irrigation in the early stage reduces attack because the pest prefers dry stressed conditions, so do not let young cane go thirsty. Earthing up and removing dry trash where moths shelter also helps. Release Trichogramma where available, and on heavy attack apply a recommended granular or spray insecticide directed at the base, following label dose and PHI. Trench planting and balanced fertiliser give a vigorous crop that escapes some damage. Confirm the borer and any chemical with your KVK or UPCSR Shahjahanpur.
