When is the best time to sow beetroot (chukandar) and which variety?

Beetroot is a cool season root crop, so the main sowing is from September to November in the plains, with some growers in mild areas extending it. Hot weather gives poor root colour and woody texture. Detroit Dark Red and similar globe types are widely grown and accepted in the market for their deep colour. Sow seed directly in lines on well prepared, stone free soil so roots grow straight, and thin the seedlings to give each root room to size up. The crop is ready in roughly two to three months.
