For Kolar, choose firm, disease resistant hybrids since leaf curl virus, bacterial wilt and blight are heavy here. Arka Rakshak is an excellent public sector F1 hybrid with triple resistance to tomato leaf curl virus, bacterial wilt and early blight, gives firm deep red fruits of about 80 to 100 g with good keeping quality, and suits both table and distant market sale. Arka Samrat is another good triple resistant hybrid. Many private hybrids also do well; pick one with leaf curl tolerance because that virus, spread by whitefly, is the biggest yield killer in Kolar. Combine a resistant hybrid with whitefly management, staking, and good spacing for clean, marketable fruit and lower spray costs.

Since switching to a triple resistant hybrid my leaf curl problem dropped a lot and my spray bill came down. Staking and whitefly control still matter though.

Arka Rakshak holds up well for distant market sale. The firm fruit travels to the city market without going soft, which got me fewer rejections than the softer hybrid I grew before.

Bacterial wilt is the silent killer in some Kolar plots, plants just wilt and die. On my wilt prone field a wilt resistant hybrid like Arka Samrat made the difference, since no spray cures wilt once it sets in.

Do not pick a variety on the name alone. I check which hybrid is doing well in neighbouring fields this season and ask the local KVK, because the disease pressure shifts and what worked two years back is not always the best now.

Many private company hybrids also do well here, not only the public ones. I grow a private leaf curl tolerant hybrid that yields heavily, but I always confirm it has leaf curl tolerance before buying since that is what wrecks the crop in Kolar.

Whatever hybrid you choose, raise the seedlings under net and stake the crop. A resistant variety alone is not enough, the year I skipped the net nursery even the resistant hybrid picked up some leaf curl in the field.

Caution on cost: the good resistant hybrid seed is expensive. It paid off for me through lower losses and fewer sprays, but plan the seed budget, and buy from an authorised dealer with a bill so you get genuine seed.
