Planning a 1000 sq m polyhouse for gerbera cut flowers. Want investment, subsidy and payback idea.

Gerbera is a high value cut flower grown under polyhouse, and yes the National Horticulture Board supports protected cultivation. A naturally ventilated polyhouse typically costs in the range of 800 to 1100 rupees per sq m to build, so a 1000 sq m unit plus planting material and setup can run into several lakh rupees. NHB gives a credit linked back ended subsidy of around 50 percent of project cost for protected cultivation, subject to a ceiling and to you first taking a bank term loan, with release after a Joint Inspection Team verifies the project. Some states add a top up. Gerbera plants yield for about three years, giving a steady flow of stems for the bouquet and event market. Payback is often three to four years if rates and quality hold. Confirm current NHB norms, ceilings and your state top up with the board and your bank before investing.
I run a gerbera polyhouse near Kolar. The subsidy is real but it comes after you spend, through the bank, so arrange your margin money first. Quality and cold chain decide your rate. Bengaluru florists pay well for long straight stems.
Polyhouse gerbera needs discipline, fertigation and pest scouting daily. Get good imported planting material from a reliable source. My first batch suffered from poor drainage, fix the raised beds properly. Returns are steady once you find regular buyers.
Do not underestimate the running cost after the polyhouse is built. Plant material, fertigation, packing sleeves and transport to the market all add up every month. I would say keep working capital for at least the first year set aside, because gerbera takes a few months to start yielding well after planting.
One thing nobody told me: the subsidy file takes time and the Joint Inspection happens after construction, so do not spend assuming the money is already in hand. Keep all bills and photos of the structure. My loan plus margin money carried me until the subsidy was released several months later.
