Training bottle gourd on a trellis or pandal lifts vines off the ground, gives straighter fruits, cleaner harvest and fewer rots and fruit fly losses than ground culture. Sow on pits or ridges with about 1.5 to 2 m between pits and 1 to 1.5 m within row, putting two to three seeds per pit and thinning to the best one or two. Erect a bamboo and wire pandal at about 1.8 to 2 m height and guide vines up with strings. Apply farmyard manure and a balanced fertiliser schedule with split nitrogen, and use drip with mulch to save water and suppress weeds. Hand pollination in early morning improves fruit set when bee activity is low. Confirm exact spacing and dose with your local horticulture office.

After I shifted lauki to a pandal in Nashik the fruits are long and clean and picking is easy. On the ground I used to lose many to rot and fruit fly. The structure cost is recovered in one good season.

Hand pollination in the early morning is what filled my fruits properly. The female flowers were opening but not setting because there were too few bees. I dab the male flower onto the female before the sun gets hot and now almost every female sets a fruit.

Build the pandal strong because a full grown lauki crop is heavy, especially after rain. My first light bamboo structure sagged and a section came down with the vines. Good posts and tight wire are worth the extra cost.

I run drip with plastic mulch under the pandal and it cut my watering and weeding a lot. The mulch also keeps any low hanging fruit off the wet soil so fewer rot. Two improvements together gave me cleaner fruit and less labour.

A small caution on variety: pick a long fruited type that the trellis market wants, not just any seed. The local trader pays more for the long straight gourds that grow well hanging. Ask which named variety is selling before you sow.
