Looking for a rabi onion variety with good storage life and yield for Nashik conditions.

For rabi in Nashik, dark red storing varieties give the best returns because rabi onion is grown mainly for long storage. Popular choices are N-2-4-1 (Nasik Red), Agrifound Light Red, Bhima Kiran and Bhima Shakti, which mature in about 120 to 130 days and store well for 5 to 6 months in a ventilated chawl. Transplant 8 to 9 week old seedlings in December to January with 15 cm row and 10 cm plant spacing. Avoid heavy late nitrogen and stop irrigation 10 to 15 days before harvest so the necks dry and bulbs cure properly, which improves storage. Light red, single centred, tight necked bulbs fetch better mandi rates and resist storage rot.
I grow N-2-4-1 every rabi near Lasalgaon. It keeps very well till the rates improve after monsoon. Just do not over irrigate at the end or the bulbs sprout in storage.
Bhima Shakti has worked well for me when I want a longer storing lot. It tends to hold a bit longer than light red types in my chawl, but check seed availability at your nearest dealer or KVK before the rabi nursery as stocks run out fast.
One caution from experience: whatever variety you pick, buy from a known seed source and ask for the lot details. Cheap unknown onion seed gave me a lot of bolters and doubles one year, which ruined the storage lot no matter how good the variety name sounded.
