Thompson Seedless and its clones such as Tas-A-Ganesh and Sonaka are the backbone of the Nashik table grape industry, especially for the fresh export trade and raisin making. Coloured seedless varieties like Sharad Seedless and Crimson are also grown for specific markets. Nashik's climate, well-drained soils, and established export infrastructure suit these seedless varieties, which are grown on rootstocks like Dogridge to manage salinity and vigour. Choice depends on your target market: export, domestic fresh, or raisins. Grafting on the right rootstock and strict canopy and fertigation management are essential for export quality. Confirm current variety and rootstock recommendations with the ICAR National Research Centre for Grapes, Pune, and your local grape growers association.

Around Niphad we mostly grow Thompson clones on Dogridge rootstock for export. The rootstock really helps with our salty water. Sharad Seedless gives good colour for the markets that want black grapes.

Decide your market before you decide your variety. I split my plot into an export block of Thompson clones and a coloured block for domestic, so a price crash in one does not sink the whole year. Talk to your local growers association about which buyers are active.

If you are going for export, get clear on the residue and chemical rules from the start. The NRC Grapes and exporters publish what is allowed for each market, and a single banned residue can reject a whole container. We follow the recommended schedule and keep every spray recorded.
