I am from Saurashtra and want to start a Kesar mango orchard. Which areas give the best Kesar quality and why is Gir Kesar so famous? Will Kesar do well in my heavier soil?
Kesar is the leading commercial mango of Gujarat and does very well across Saurashtra and South Gujarat. The Gir region (Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Amreli) has the GI-tagged Gir Kesar, where the foothill climate and soils give the typical aroma and orange pulp that command a premium. Kesar also performs in Kutch, Valsad and Navsari belts. It prefers well-drained medium soils; very heavy black soil that waterlogs is a problem, so on heavy land make sure of drainage, plant on ridges or mounds, and keep wider spacing. Kesar is more regular bearing and more heat and drought tolerant than Alphonso, which is one reason it has spread fast. For the Gir Kesar premium you must be in the notified GI area and follow the GI norms.
Kutch Kesar comes very early in the season and gets a good rate because it reaches market before everyone. Drip and mulching are a must there in the heat.
On my black soil I lost some young plants to root problems till I made raised mounds and gave good drainage. After that Kesar grew fine.
