Saurashtra is the main groundnut belt of Gujarat, and popular varieties include GG 20, GJG 9, GJG 22, GG 7 and TG 37A, with both bunch (Spanish) and semi spreading types grown. Bunch types like GG 20 are early, easy to harvest and suit timely kharif sowing, while spreading types can yield more with longer duration. Sow with the onset of monsoon in June to early July using treated, well filled kernels, keep about 30 cm rows for bunch types, and ensure good gypsum and calcium supply for pod filling. Treat seed with fungicide and Rhizobium. Confirm the latest recommended variety for your district with Junagadh Agricultural University or your KVK.

GG 20 works well for me in Junagadh because it matures early and digging is easier. In years with good late rain the spreading type gives more pods, so it depends on the season.

Use only well filled, fresh, undamaged kernels for seed and shell them close to sowing. Groundnut seed loses germination fast and broken kernels rot in the soil. The year I used poorly stored seed my stand was thin. I now buy graded seed and handle it gently while shelling.

Whichever variety you sow, plan gypsum at pegging from the start, because the bunch types fill quickly and miss the calcium window if you are late. On my GG 20 the years I banded gypsum on time the kernels were plump and pops were few.

Tikka leaf spot and rust hit some varieties harder in a humid year here. Ask Junagadh Agricultural University which current varieties have better field tolerance, and keep your seed treatment and any need based fungicide ready. Matching the variety to your disease pressure matters as much as the yield number.
