When I sold at the mandi the agent cut several deductions and my final amount was much less than the rate times weight. What are all these charges and which ones are legal?
At an APMC mandi the typical deductions are the market fee charged by the APMC, a commission for the commission agent or arhtiya, and sometimes a small cess or development charge. On top of that you may see deductions for labour or palledari for unloading and bagging, weighing or tulai, and bardana or bag cost if bags are provided. The market fee and the agent commission are usually a small percentage of the sale value, but the exact rates differ a lot by state and by commodity, and some states have reduced or removed market fees on certain crops. The labour and weighing charges are by quantity. Always ask the agent for an itemised sale slip showing each deduction so nothing is added vaguely. Confirm the legal commission and market fee percentages for your crop from your local APMC office or notice board, because illegal extra cuts are common where farmers do not check.
Brother the sale slip is the key. Many agents avoid giving a proper slip. Insist on it. Once I started taking the printed slip every time, the random small cuts stopped.
In our state the market fee on some crops was cut down a couple of years back. Check the current rate, do not assume the old percentage.
